Holiday Fun
The three counties in West Wales; Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire
and Ceredigion offer more than just a beach holiday. Among some
of the attractions available are Fishguard’s Ocean Lab, created
by the Henson Creature Shop - here you can take an amazing simulated
submarine journey back in time. Enjoy a day out at Folly Farm (much
of which is indoors) where the animals will be delighted to meet
you!
And there’s more animal magnetism at the Welsh Wildlife Centre
near Cardigan, Manor House Farm near Tenby or the Dyfed
Shire Horse Farm near Newport.
For action and excitement, Oakwood
is a ‘must’. With the award-winning Megaphobia wooden
roller coaster and adrenalin-pumping experiences like Vertigo you
won’t be short of thrills here!
Historic Holiday Attractions
Pembrokeshire’s rich history and culture goes back thousands
of years. South of the Landsker boarders is known as Little England
beyond Wales, due mainly to the Normans whose arrival in 1093 created
a linguistic and cultural divide between the North and South. Standing
stones such as Pentre Ifan near Newport date back 5,000 years and
are among some of Wales’ finest ancient burial chambers and
the bluestones of Stonehenge were quarried from the Preseli Hills
before being transported to Salisbury Plain. The church at Nevern
is renown for the magnificent 11th Century Celtic Cross which stands
at 13 feet high and the yew tree which is said to consistently drip
blood red sap.
Other impressive historic sites include the romantic castles of
Carew, Pembroke, Manorbier, and Cilgerran; Tenby with it’s
Tudor
Merchant’s House, a medieval walled town with narrow streets;
the Bishop’s Palaces stands next to St Davids cathedral even
though a ruin still relays the influence and power of the medieval
church; and the tiny, isolated St. Govan’s Chapel tucked beneath
the cliffs of St. Govan’s Head, its said that if you count
the steps on the way down and then count them on the way up the
numbers don’t coincide.
